In 1899, Nikola Tesla came to Colorado Springs chasing lightning—driven not by profit, but by passion for progress. His groundbreaking work in wireless energy and bold ideas still inspire generations.

Mr. Rick Sohns- Born and raised in Colorado Springs, my journey in electronics began at 14, riding the city bus from Briargate to Sound Tech Electronics in Knob Hill, where I worked under inventor Brendon Nichols. The next summer I built speaker crossovers for John Dunlavy at DAL, at 16 I landed my first legal job at OEM Electronics off Hancock.
After high school, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Radio/TV Broadcasting.
I joined Best Buy in 2000, initially in Electronic sales, quickly becoming known as the store’s go-to expert—so much so that the Corporate Sales Director secretly shopped me and handed me $100 in recognition. I went on to become Colorado Springs’ first in-home A/V service technician (later known as Geek Squad), eventually advancing to Master Technician, Magnolia Lead, and Regional Project Engineer/Manager.
COVID restructuring brought me back to where it started. The building in Knob Hill where I first worked now features a Nikola Tesla mural—fitting, since Tesla’s spirit of innovation and persistence continues to inspire me to think boldly and keep moving foward

Tesla in Colorado Springs: Birthplace of Big Ideas

In 1899, Nikola Tesla chose Colorado Springs as the testing ground for his boldest ideas. Drawn by the region’s high altitude, dry air, and frequent lightning storms, he built a massive experimental lab on Knob Hill—complete with a 142-foot mast and a powerful magnifying transmitter capable of generating artificial lightning over 100 feet long.

During his time here, Tesla proved key concepts:

  • Wireless power transmission — lighting bulbs without wires.

  • Earth resonance — detecting what he believed were stationary electrical waves in the Earth.

  • High-voltage discharge control — mastering artificial lightning.

He believed the Earth itself could carry power like a giant conductor, and Colorado Springs gave him the space to test that theory.

Tesla left the city confident he could scale up his vision. Back in New York, he began building the Wardenclyffe Tower, named after landowner James Warden, to create a global wireless energy and communication system—built on the very principles he explored under Pikes Peak’s skies.
